Disney has the privilege of creating happiness for service members and their families, recognizing the many sacrifices they make for our country. We recently had the honor of making some magic for family members of fallen U.S. military heroes along with a family of a fallen British service member, our third time hosting this group for a special day of fun at Walt Disney World Resort alongside the National Football League (NFL).
These families traveled to Orlando from across the country and even as far as England, as part of an NFL Pro Bowl experience organized by the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS). The nonprofit is focused on providing compassionate care and comprehensive resources to the loved ones of fallen military heroes.
Before they kicked off their weekend of football fun, the families began their day experiencing the excitement of Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT and even a fun greeting with Star-Lord.
The families shared memories and beautiful moments honoring their fallen heroes. We were grateful to help make their visit to Walt Disney World a special experience as they created new, enduring and happy memories in our parks.
“Today was magical, fun, and filled with surprises for the families of the fallen. These incredible Walt Disney World welcomes have become a tradition for TAPS and being so personal and meaningful, the Disney Salute team makes us feel like family. We are so grateful we are able to come to Orlando with the NFL for the Pro Bowl and to bring some of the magic of Disney into this very special weekend,” said Diana Roday Hosford, TAPS vice president, Sports & Entertainment.
The day was made even more special with a warm welcome from members of our Disney SALUTE veteran employee resource group, who understand the experience of losing fellow service members due to military-connected service. Disney SALUTE was created over 10 years ago to honor and empower our cast members with military backgrounds, fostering a sense of community and support.
Also in attendance were Walt Disney World Ambassadors, Serena Arvizu and Shannon Smith-Conrad.
“Serena and I both come from military families. We understand the kind of impact these moments have for families as they create new, happy memories together. It’s so important for us to recognize and thank the men and women serving our country, as well as their families, for the sacrifices they make every day,” said Shannon.
Disney’s admiration for members of the U.S. Armed Forces dates back to more than 100 years ago, beginning with our founders Walt and Roy O. Disney who both served their country during World War I.
